Twin Towns

Town twinning has a long tradition in Europe which has been revived after the World War II as a way to promote cultural, political and economical cooperation between cities and encourage mutual understanding between their inhabitants.

Prague started making partnerships with other cities in the early nineties of the past century and can presently boast a list of 14 official and another 12 unofficial twin towns among which you can find many European capitals and other major world cities. Here is a list of some of them:

Berlin:

The capital of Germany and at the same time one of the 16 Bundesländer has got a population of 3.5 million and is the largest city in of this country. Situated in north-eastern Germany, it is the centre of the Berlin-Brandenburg metropolitan area which is truly is a big melting pot with its 5 million inhabitants from over 180 nations.

Chicago:
The 3 million people living in Chicago make it the third most populous in the United States. Known for Al Capone and the prohibition era as well as for interesting architecture like the Sears Towers, the city is not only home to several modern and jazz dance troupes but also considered the birthplace of house music.

Kyoto:
Once the capital of the Japanese Empire for more than 800 hundred years Kyoto still remains an important centre of mainly tourism-based economy and attracts annually many tourists who want to see the beautiful traditional architecture of Ancient Kyoto (listed by the UNESCO as World Heritage Site) and have an interest in Buddhist temples and Shinto shrines (there are 2000 of them in Kyoto!) and of course in the delicious Japanese cuisine.

Taipei:

Taipei is the capital city of the democratic island country of the Republic of China which however is known under Taiwan to the vast majority. It has undergone a rapid economic development since the 1960s and become one of the global cities in the production of high technology.  Its landmark the Taipei 101, currently the world’s tallest building can be seen as a symbol of it.
