Plzen.

Plzen, home of the famous Pilsner beer, is about 1hour and 15 minutes away from Prague by car. Situated in Western Bohemia, Plzen is the fourth largest city of the Czech Republic.

Its historical core is still limited by the line of the former town fortification walls which have given way to a green belt of parks in modern day Plzen, though. Within lies, in the original Gothic urban layout, the old town center declared a historical landmark in1989.Herein architectonic and cultural history is carefully preserved.

Attractions include the Burghers’ House, a Renaissance town hall, the Josef Kajetan Tyl Theatre, the 13th century Gothic St. Bartholomew's Cathedral with Czech Republic’s highest bell tower as well as the world’s third-largest synagogue, The Great Synagogue.
Further Plzen has a 20 km underground tunnel network part of which is open to the public for an unusual perspective on the city.

Since the Bohemian town is well-known for its brewing tradition, breweries, like the Plzeňský Prazdroj brewery, are open for visits.
Plzen is also associated with the automobile manufacturer Skoda which was founded in the city of Plzen in 1925. Today, apart from its attracting architectural beauty, Plzen is a center for cultural events and festivals including the Smetana Days named after the famous 19th century Czech composer Bedřich Smetana who is probably best known for his piece “The Moldau” (Vltava).
